About us
Software Design & Support LLC offers software design, media consulting and custom-writen software solutions.
Prior to starting Software Design & Support, owner Richard Russell was an editor at The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. In 10 years as a senior manager at the newspaper, Russell managed most of the technology-related projects that involved the newsroom.
Russell, who holds a master's degree in Software Design and Programming from the University of Denver, has two decades of experience in the newspaper industry.
In 1989, he converted his first newspaper from a mainframe publishing system (Atex photo typesetters) to electronic desktop pagination, helping one of the first small newspapers in Alabama to completely paginate the paper using Quark Xpress and Apple Laserwriters. Not only did he manage the radical transition to electronic pagination, he simultaneously trained the staff to deal with the new challenges. It would not be the last time.
At a succession of newspapers in Alabama, Florida and Louisiana, he was instrumental at helping identify efficiencies through innovation and automation while simultaneously working as a newsroom editor.
In 2010, Russell left The Times-Picayune to start his own company, and today he is an independent consultant and software designer specializing in Java and Javascript programming.
